Practice Your Brushing Technique in Your Downtime

Brushing and flossing are one of the most important daily tasks you can do for your oral health. Make sure to practice your brushing technique in your downtime. Good oral practice helps prevent tooth decay and infection. This helps to prevent costly dental intervention at a later date. Even people who brush regularly may not be brushing the right way.

If you have a dental emergency, Galloro Dental has two offices here in Toronto. Additionally, we offer preventative dental care such as teeth cleaning and x-rays. Our team of dental professionals is available to address any of your dental or orthodontic concerns.

Brush Twice Daily

By brushing your teeth at least 2 times a day you remove more plaque which can cause dental disease. But to ensure your brushing properly you should follow a few guidelines. First of which is to brush for two minutes a day while holding your brush at a 45 degree angle. The American Dental Association believes this is the amount of time one needs to fully dislodge food particles and remove plaque.

You should also make sure your brush is soft and you don’t brush too hard. Too firm bristles and hard brushing can wear down your tooth’s structure over time. Ensure you use gentle pressure to brush in short strokes for your teeth, roof of the mouth, gums, and your tongue. You can hold your brush vertically to brush the back of your teeth. Use an ADA approved toothpaste that contains fluoride. Those with braces should be sure to brush the brackets and wires thoroughly to get rid of food particles that may be trapped.

Why Flossing Is Important, Too

When you practice your brushing technique in your downtime, you should also work on your flossing technique, too. Flossing is just as vital to your oral health. Daily flossing has been shown to reduce the incidence of cavities and gingivitis. By flossing you are able to remove any plaque that has built up between your teeth and along the gumline. Some may find flossing with actual string floss uncomfortable. Fortunately, there are other options. Another ADA approved interdental cleaning device, such as a water flosser, may be an alternative more suitable for some.
